Finally a food update

I think I have come to the conclusion I will not be a food blogger. I seem to be more interested in cooking and eating it than remembering to photograph and blog about it.  Take for instance this post. I started it weeks ago when we were still in Canada and have only just got around to completing it.

Since coming to Canada we have definitely been buying less steak to cook on the bbq – it along with everything else is expensive. We are definitely missing the cheap asparagus which had become a regular feature on the BBQ. Cheap summer corn is still in abundance so we are enjoying that instead. Yesterday we went to a farmers market in Rossland. I helped a lady wheel her baguettes across the road for the market and was given a free one which was nice. There was heaps of lovely produce and we spent a pleasant time wandering around tasting and shopping.

One thing that has been great is all the stone fruit. A kilo of cherries for $2.99, awesome peaches and all sorts of berries – yum.

Pizza - I think a bit of salami may have found it's way onto this one
Pizzas have been making regular appearances. We buy cheap frozen pizzas with very basic toppings and then add our own. Pumpkin, spinach and feta being a favourite.
Pancakes are always on Symi’s list of favourites although Rob has been known to eat the odd one! They are much easier to make since I treated myself to a new non-stick frypan. I am always glad I bought a stick blender when we first got here. I has proved really useful for making pancakes, smoothies, blending soups and even cake mixes.
Not all for you Rob!

I am still on my kale kick enjoying it for breakfast with poached eggs or in an omelette, in stir fries and salads and on bruschetta when we find decent bread. The main problem with the bread is the sweetness, particularly in the wholemeal bread which is odd. English muffins are good and Symi and I often have them for breakfast with tomato and avocado – and occasionally bacon as evidenced here.

Fried rice is also a good standby. Rob is the designated rice cooker in the RV (and at home if we don’t use the rice cooker). Rob is also the designated vacuumer (is that a word?) in the RV – yay.

We found some lamb this for a nearly reasonable price – it was 30% off. We have been missing lamb badly and have enjoyed on piece roasted in the oven and the other grilled on the BBQ.

Overall we are still managing to eat pretty healthily. We are over the peak of summer now with the days starting to get slowly shorter. I think we will miss the BBQ when it gets cooler but we can always pull out the slow cooker. I just downloaded a heap of cooking magazines from the library and they are all full of winter slow braises so we can always try some of them.

Food photographers do not have blue plates!

As I finish this we are sitting in a campsite near Yellowstone it is freezing and snow is forecast for around here. I heard on the radio it is also forecast for Denver in Colorado. If they get snow it will be the earliest it has snowed in the season for 10 years. Given the cold weather ribs seemed appropriate.

Finishing and getting internet good enough to post are two different things. Posting this about a week later. Yellowstone post to follow.
